Sam Martin - Detroit Lions
Fourth-year punter who took over the Lions’ punting, holding and kickoff duties in 2013, and has established himself as one of the best young legs in the NFL. Martin has currently set the Lions Top-3 single season records for net punting average with a 40.4 in 2013, 40.1 in 2014 and 42.0 in 2015, which ranks first in Lions history. He also holds three of the Top-7 records for gross punting average. Martin started the 2015 season punting five times for 176 yards, including three punts inside the 20-yard line in Week 1 at San Diego (9/13). Also handled the teams’ kickoff duties as he booted three touchbacks. In 2014, his second season as the Lions’ leg on special teams, booming 68 punts for 3,318 yards (41.6 avg) and a net average of 40.1. Also landed 29 punts inside the 20-yard line and posted a long of 71 yards. Martin finished the 2013 season ranked sixth in the NFL (third in NFC) in gross punting average (47.2), 10th (seventh in NFC) in net punting average (40.4) and tied for 10th with 32 punts of 50+ yards. His 40.40 net punting average broke the franchise record (official statistic since 1967) for net punting average. Martin ranks third in Appalachian State history with 226 punts and 9,397 yards and sixth with a 41.6-yard punting average. Became only the second specialist in Appalachian State history to be selected in the NFL Draft since Harold Alexander was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round (67th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft.
